STILNEST is a German-based worldwide collaborative design company (a concept and business model I freaking LOVE) that sells amazing 3D printed jewelry and whose aesthetic is minimalist heaven…
MODERN, BOLD & CLEAN DESIGN
Jump to cuckoo clocks: I love ‘em. Always have. Pink ones, blue ones, old ones, new ones – I love cuckoo clocks. There’s one buried somewhere in a box in my parents’ attic that I’ve wanted for years and have just been too lazy, erm I mean busy, to track down. What the hell do cuckoo clocks have to do with anything? Oh, only everything.
CUCKOO CLOCKS ARE COOL AGAIN THANKS TO STILNEST.
(AS THOUGH THEY EVER WEREN’T COOL. PFFFT. AS IF.)
Stilnest gathered a group of artists (who also happen to be strangers) from around the globe to collaborate on the coolest 3D printed creation EVER (okay…maybe the 3D printed artificial ears that are being used in reconstructive surgery beat these, but juuuust barely). Their mission? To reimagine the cuckoo clock with the aptly named Cuckoo Project. And boy, oh boy, did they ever succeed.
The Cuckoo Project’s clock is a far cry from traditional. It combines social media, design, music and cutting edge technology. How does social media come into play? A traditional cuckoo clock is a pendulum based automaton that, once an hour, turns a gear that opens a door and from it emerges a little cuckoo bird to chirp and chime its little song. But not so with the Cuckoo Project’s clock.
The designers created an automaton that, instead of marking the hour, marks hashtags (specifically #Stilnest). And while I am a staunch fan of the traditional cuckoo clock designs, I’m also a staunch fan of anything beautiful and badass, which this “clock” clearly is.
JUST CHECK OUT THE AMAZING END RESULT…
AND MAKE SURE TO PUT A NAPKIN OVER YOUR KEYBOARD BECAUSE YOU’RE GUARANTEED TO DROOL.
And you know what? A little bird told me (yeah, I know…horrible pun…you should really be used to them by now…seriously) that they may be available to purchase in not only white (which I love) but in color too. Sign me up. Count me in. I wonder if they’ll do a Tiffany blue (not likely since it’s trademarked – a fact I just found out and is now going to force me to intentionally and specifically use it in more of my art because trademarking a color is bullsh*t (even though I love Tiffany’s). That’s like trademarking grass. Sorry but I can’t support it nor can I stand for it. For anyone else interested in some guerilla trademark infringement it’s Pantone color #1837, the hex numbers I’m finding for it vary wildly so what I might do is just take one of my little blue boxes on down to the paint store and have them scan the color to match and get the numbers that way. It doesn’t really count if the color is “close enough,” now does it. Trademarking a color. Asinine. It’s physically impossible for me to roll my eyes big enough to adequately convey just how stupid that is…Okay. I’ve gone off an a weird tangent. Sorry). Soooooo…yeah. Matte black would look nice, as would a soft matte lilac or violet.
What do you think?
Are you cuckoo for cuckoo clocks now?
What color clock would you want to see?
And if you had a 3D printer and could design & print anything in the universe what would it be?
And would you make it Tiffany blue to join my protest? Let me know in the comments.
Bold Kisses & Cuckoo Chaos,
Alli Woods Frederick
