hidden inside

THERE WERE SO MANY WAYS to interpret this week’s Project 52 theme, “Inside.”  I knew I didn’t want to go for the obvious so instead this is what I created:

3/52
THEME:  Inside
TITLE:  “ …waiting…

hidden inside

WE ALL HAVE THINGS that are hidden inside us.  Pieces of us that we tuck away and keep quietly to ourselves – some of us do it out of fear, some out of shame, some out of sadness, some out of a need for privacy, some out of hope.

SOME ARE dark secrets, some are dreams, some are traumas, some are loves, some are heartbreaks and some are all of those combined and so much more, but we all have them tucked away, nestled someplace safe where we keep them from the world, waiting for the day we can let them out, the day we can free them; free ourselves; free our hearts; free our souls of the all that we keep inside.

SADLY, some of us never release them.  Some of us keep them hidden inside forever – never freeing ourselves from the burden of a guilty conscience; never releasing our hopes and dreams to fly free; never letting go of our pain; never sharing our heart with the one we love.

SOME OF US keep them inside waiting for the right time.  The funny thing about right times is that they never arrive…neither do somedays.  They both live in a future that never arrives, remaining forever out of reach.

SO THE WAITING that we tell ourselves is only temporary stretches on into eternity, every opportunity to release what’s hidden inside slips away and we are left with lifetimes’ worth of what-ifs and if-onlys.

quiet life

::  nightshift blue by Dana Tanamachi  ::

AMEN.  There is a certain peace that comes with working with your hands; with creating; with finding that space where you lose all sense of time and are in the perfect state of be and having something tangible to show for it at the end of it all.

BE IT TILLING the soil, working with wood, throwing clay, painting, knitting…whatever your medium there is a huge amount of peace and quiet to be found in those moments of creative labor.

SO MAKE THE TIME to do the work and, to quote Depeche Mode, enjoy the silence as you create your quiet life.

country living

I GREW UP ON A FARM outside Independence, Kansas.  My best friends as a toddler were turtles, pigs and cows.  My mom would find me by following the trail of clothes I’d left behind.  (what can I say…I loved being naked when I was a kid.  My first full sentence was when I was 2 years old and my mom asked me, rhetorically of course, “Why won’t you keep your clothes on?”  My response was “I wanna be free.”  So there you have it.)  I picked berries, helped mom in the garden by walking behind her un-planting the seeds she’d sown (even as a child I was well-meaning but ultimately a pain in the ass) and sat naked on turtles in the road poking at them with sticks.

I was a little naked redheaded farm girl living in Kansas.

country living

AS A TEEN AND ADULT I spent my life living in the cities (and occasionally the suburbs) of Philly, Houston and Austin.  (This, of course, isn’t counting the couple of years I spent living in my van, traveling around the country living in the middle of nowhere working the renaissance fairs with my dog, Lakota, and my less-than-pleasant chronically cheating charmer of an ex-boyfriend.)

THERE WAS ALWAYS SOMETHING to do.  I had my fill of galleries, museums, theater, ballet, shows almost every night of the week, parties, girls’ night at Atomic, beer, guys, craziness and drama while donning my purple/red/orange/green/blue/hot pink hair, piercings, shredded fishnets, combat boots and studded leather everythings.

I thought I had everything at my fingertips, but something was always missing.

country living

WHAT I FAILED TO REALIZE during my time of urban living was that I wasn’t truly happy.  I was trying to fill a void with distractions.  That something I was missing was nature and my connection to it.  I look back now and notice that I constantly tried to reach out to nature; to reconnect to it.

IN AUSTIN I HAD A SECRET densely wooded park that few seemed to know about tucked away in the heart of the city where I could wander about the woods without a trace of human induced noise other than what I created.

SURROUNDING HOUSTON I had my greenbelts.  My wooded walking trails that wound through the residential neighborhoods where I would sit on the bayou and watch the turtles and terrapins swimming about while listening to the huge pileated woodpeckers call from the trees (which is really weird sounding in case you were wondering – their calls are crazy.) or watch the rabbits, deer and squirrels scamper about and graze at dusk.

country living

ALL THOSE YEARS I thought I was a city girl because I love music, art, fashion and ridiculously tall shoes and the solitude that anonymity brings.  I thought those were things I could only have if I lived in the heart of it all.  Turns out I was wrong.

I’m a country girl at heart.  I enjoy country living.

(sans the cowboy boots and “new country” music.  noooooo thank you.)

I STILL LOVE my music, art, and ridiculous shoes and I can still love those things living in the country.  And I’m more than okay with being the small town weirdo (although I prefer the term adorably eccentric) because people actually like me once they get to know me, even with my eccentricities and crazy but totally badass shoes.

BUT I AM HAPPIEST when I have trees surrounding me; when I can see all the stars at night and the Milky Way too; when I can stand naked in the woods with nothing but my boots on if I damn well please and there’s no one there to judge me or stop me (except Google  – our prying eyes in the sky.  Thanks, Big Brother…enjoy the show.); when I can connect with nature and its beauty and its freedom and its gentle quiet.

That is where my heart is.
That is where I’m home.

country living

WOULD I LIVE IN THE CITY AGAIN?  I would if I needed to…if my imaginary husband decided to make a career change to pursue his dream and that dream happened to be in the city I would move in a heartbeat because that’s what love is…but I would leave with the knowledge that when it was time to recharge and reconnect with myself and the world and real life, not the plastic life of the urban jungle, I would know how to do it:  a visit with the trees and the wind and the bullfrogs and the katydids.

WHERE IS YOUR HEART?  Where is your home?  What is that something that’s missing from your life?  Have you found it yet?  Are you still searching?  Share your story in the comments section below if you’re so inclined.

IMPERFECTION IS EVERYWHERE

THIS WEEK’S THEME touches on something everyone struggles with:  imperfection.  We see it in ourselves.  We see it in others.  We see it in our surroundings.  We see it everywhere we look – some of us more so others.

Imperfection is everywhere.

AND WHILE SOME view these imperfections as flaws, as things to overcome, to change or to fix while on a maddening quest for impossible perfection (and to be completely fair and honest, some of them are…like chronic lying, stealing or cheating) , some of us see them differently.  What we see as imperfect in ourselves and others are precisely the things that make us unique.

Our imperfections make us special; 100% unique in all the universe.

WE ARE ALL, each and every one of us, amazing, stunning, beautifully imperfect creatures…each and every one of us.

ALL OUR FUNNY QUIRKS – our chipped teeth, flat feet, dental hygiene rituals, fingernail picking, dark moods, talkativeness, shyness, accents, weird toes, big butts, small butts, large scars, bad puns, the eyesight of Mr. Magoo – all our individual “flaws” come together, they snuggle up with each other, they intertwine, melting into each other to create you and to create me – imperfectly perfect people and every single one of us unique…and how could that be anything other than mind-blowingly, heartthrob-ingly, soul-rapturing-ly beautiful?

How could that not be wondrous and awe-inspiring?

2/52:  IMPERFECTION
TITLE:  “…they are mine and mine alone…”

IMPERFECTION IS EVERYWHERE

I KNOW, I KNOW…I proclaim imperfection as a thing of beauty and then I post a rather dark self-portrait.  As per usual, I choose not to divulge the inspiration for my work.  I leave the interpretation up to you; take from it what you will; see in it what you choose.

I WILL SAY, however, that though this piece appears dark there is an immense amount of love in it, oceans’ worth.

I WOULD BE REMISS to leave out Rob’s preferred edit. He’s my trusted second pair of eyes (ironic give we both have poor eyesight *insert joke about the blind leading the blind here*) – when I can’t choose between two different edits it’s Rob to the rescue. And while 99.9999 percent of the time I’m in agreement with him, this time I choose the darker image because, while I agree with Rob and prefer his selection, I felt the darker photo was more in keeping with what I was trying to convey. Thank you, Rob, for once again being there with an honest opinion, ready to help when I need you. You’re the bee’s knees and you are appreciated.
