PAM REVEALS HER ENTHUSIASTIC SIDE

*SPOILERS GALORE – DON’T READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW.*

SUNDAY’S True Blood was a bit of an Empire Strikes Back episode – more story (and back story) than action, but what the action lacked in length it made up for in intensity.  But let’s be honest.  We don’t watch True Blood for the action.  We watch it for the characters and the storyline…and the occasional glimpse of Eric’s insane body.  Don’t try to deny it.  You know it’s true.  And while we’re on the topic of Mr. Northman…

PAM REVEALS HER ENTHUSIASTIC SIDE

I’m a staunch member of Team Eric so to see he and Sookie reunited, though briefly and under less than joyous circumstances, made me do a more somber version of my happy dance.  There are some people who, no matter how long they’re separated, what the circumstances or how bad they are for each other, will always have chemistry…and Sookie and Eric have it in spades.  I’m curious to see how they’ll wrap up their relationship with the series’ end.

But I think we can all agree that the three most amazing moments Sunday were:

PAM REVEALS HER ENTHUSIASTIC SIDE

1) Tender, sweet and gentle Terry Bellefleur coming to Arlene’s side and encouraging her to live (and yes, my sappy ass totally cried.  He was one of my all time favorite characters and no it’s not because we went to the same high school and were in the same theater department  – I never had school spirit as any of my friends from high school will attest…I’ve never been much of a “joiner.”  I’ve always been a lone wolf.) and to see him return healthy (well…healthy for a dead guy) and happy made my heart sing.

2)  The all too brief introduction of Keith the vampire.  Seriously?  Why, my dear HBO, did you introduce him at this late date?  Hubba hubba.  Hopefully he’ll stick around and help kick some evil vamp ass…at the rate characters are dying if they don’t fill in the gaps the only person who will be alive at the end will be Sookie…and that would be a very boring final episode.  And…

PAM REVEALS HER ENTHUSIASTIC SIDE

3)  Ginger was once a clever undergrad at Tulane with a bright future?!?!  SAY WHAT?  You could have knocked me over with a feather.  Her character has now transitioned from completely annoying but funny to one hundred percent tragic.  Proof that all it takes is one small decision, like walking into a video store, to change your life forever…and not always for the best, bless her bat sh*t crazy little heart.

But this week’s True Blood Tuesday quote comes from the perpetually pissed Pam as she reflects on a moment from her past…

What.  You didn’t think I was serious did you?  Come on.  You should know her better than that.  To quote Pam “My mad face and my happy face are the same.”  Enough said.  God I flippin’ love that woman.

Pretty People In The Woods

Pretty People In The Woods

THE PRETTY PEOPLE IN THE WOODS

The bee is not afraid of me,
I know the butterfly;
The pretty people in the woods
Receive me cordially.

The brooks laugh louder when I come,
The breezes madder play.
Wherefore, mine eyes, they sliver mists?
Wherefore, O summer’s day?

movies you have never seen

IT’S no secret I’m a film buff.  One of my all time favorite things in the world is to head down to the movie theater (preferably on a stormy day) to catch an early matinee (to try and ensure I’m the only person in the theater).  With my extra gigantic comfy cardigan to snuggle up in, a package of Twizzlers and a massive Diet Coke in hand, I sit in the dead center seat, triple check to make sure my cell phone is off, flip up the center arm rest (one of the best inventions ever), stretch out on my makeshift sofa and soak in the movie-going experience.  If I’m really excited about the movie I even get a case of the giggles as the music kicks in and the studio intro begins to play.

THE MOVIEGOING EXPERIENCE IS UNLIKE ANY OTHER.

MOVIES YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN

When a movie is good we are transported out of our own world and into another…and it’s magical.  We are compelled to see the world differently; to contemplate new paradigms; to see the other side of the coin; to be the voyeur; to feel; to empathize; to get goose bumps; to be terrified; to imagine endless possibilities; to see futures that may come to pass and pasts that never were; to see what lies on the other side of life.  We are invited into these worlds, these lives, these experiences and it is awesome.

Sadly, not every good movie is given it’s due.  That’s why I now present to you part one of my ongoing list of…

5 MOVIES YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN (BUT SHOULD)

26 BATHROOMS BY PETER GREENAWAY

MOVIES YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN

After searching for this for over a decade I finally tracked this down online.  You have no idea how accomplished I feel at this moment because this was hard to come by fifteen years ago, let alone now.   I kept it checked out of Vulcan Video in Austin constantly and would make everyone I knew watch it.  It’s brilliant.  The film takes you, alphabetically, through English bathrooms and the people inside them.  It’s focus is not only on design but on individual use and ritual.  There are no actors.  These are real people, real families who have opened up their bathroom doors and let the world see how they live inside the most secretive room in the house.  It’s humorous, honest and touching.  A short documentary on bathrooms sounds boring but I assure you it is anything but.  I’m linking to the video through the image below (rather than slow down your experience here by letting the long-ish video chew up bandwidth) so when you have 28 minutes to spare just click the pic and enjoy the film.  You won’t be disappointed. (Warning:  this is NOT SAFE FOR WORK and contains full frontal nudity of a non-sexual nature of both men and women.)

TUCKER & DALE VS. EVIL

MOVIES YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN

We’ve all seen the stereotypical horror film:  small group of college kids head out for a camping trip/isolated weekend at a cabin in the woods/etc when things go terribly wrong in a very bloody, graphic and brutal way.  One by one they’re picked off and hacked to pieces in some gruesome way or another.  But what if it’s all one big misunderstanding?  What if the story is told from the perspective of the weird hillbillies instead of the doomed campers?  Then you have Tucker & Dale vs. Evil.  Not only is it brilliant but it has one of my celebrity crushes, Alan Tudyk (best known as “Wash” in the cult classic Firefly and the exception to my ginger boys and ginger girls should never date rule…so feel free to contact me if you’re reading this, Alan.  The quickest way to my heart is through my funny bone. *wink*)

HAUNTER

Movies You Have Never Seen

I’m a sucker for a good paranormal thriller.  Nothing like a good ghost story and Haunter is a hidden gem in the genre.  I don’t want to say too much because I don’t want to give anything away, but Abigail Breslin plays an angst-ridden, Joy Division listening teenager who’s having a hard time of things as she notices strange things going on around her house.  It’s not mind-blowing (some parts of the mystery are pretty easy to figure out before the big reveal) but with great acting, good production values, ghosts and Joy Division it’s definitely worth the watch.

HOW I LIVE NOW

Movies You Have Never Seen

If Red Dawn (the original – I’m a purist) had a baby with Romeo & Juliette and that baby lived in the English countryside you’d have How I Live Now.  A troubled girl from America is sent to visit her cousins in England when a massive nationwide terrorist organization attacks and tries to (with rather substantial & disturbing success) take over the country.  Chaos ensues as the girl and her young cousins are forced to fend for themselves and survive the terror both foreign and domestic that is all around them.  While a story like this could easily be bleak, this story is rather uplifting…eventually.

HEAVENLY CREATURES

Movies You Have Never Seen

Based on a true story about two teenage girls in New Zealand, Heavenly Creatures is, at least story-wise, a serious departure from director Peter Jackson’s usual fair.  Though a far cry from his cult classics Dead Alive (Braindead to those of you overseas), Meet The Feebles, Bad Taste or The Frighteners, Jackson’s style still shines through in this beautiful, whimsical and utterly disturbing true tale of teenage lesbian love (not the disturbing part) and coldblooded murder (totally the disturbing part).

I’ll give you a week or two to give these a watch (all of them are available on Netflix – except 26 Bathrooms) and then I’ll be back with v2.0, chock full of more fabulous films that you may have missed.

As always, I’d love to know your thoughts.  So feel free to rock your best Siskel and Ebert and leave your own review in the comments.

Until next time, happy watching, boys and girls.

HOLY.  Sh*t.  am I the only one still reeling from Sunday’s episode? (SPOILER ALERT!) I didn’t see that coming (apparently neither did Alcide) but why didn’t Sookie?  She should have heard those idiots coming.  I can’t believe that’s how they took him out.  He was a hero, a fighter and protector.  He deserved a more honorable and more meaningful death than being shot by cowards hiding in the woods.

I understand the need to tie up loose ends since this is the final season, but HBO needs to do it in ways that honor the characters, the story and the fans…and so far that’s just not happening.  I’m concerned that in their rush to bring all things to a resolution they’re going to sacrifice the quality of the story (it wouldn’t be the first time, if we’re being honest) and leave fans feeling completely dissatisfied.

Isn’t it bad enough that we’re already heartbroken over the loss of the show and beloved characters, but you have to add insult to injury, HBO?  I hope not.  Some seasons start out rocky and improve.  I hope this final season proves to be the same and that we’re given the series finale we and the show deserve.

sam merlotte ponders the meaning of life

But enough of my critique and concerns and on to more important matters…like am I the only one that cheered and laughed my ass off when karma paid Maxine Fortenberry a rather ghastly visit?  I’m awful aren’t I?

But my favorite line from Sunday’s “Fire In The Hole” comes courtesy of Sam Merlotte as he has an existential crisis while speaking with Reverend Daniels about the epiphany he had after witnessing the carnage in a nearby town that was wiped out by diseased and dying vampires.

SAM MERLOTTE PONDERS THE MEANING OF LIFE

SAM MERLOTTE PONDERS THE MEANING OF LIFE

While I do love the hell out of some pizza, I have to admit he’s right – there is so much more to life.  There has to be.  I’ve been experiencing my own ongoing existential crisis since surviving cancer and surviving my attempted murder.

(Say what?!?  Yes, someone tried to kill me…that’s something I haven’t shared with you guys…if you read my article in the summer 2014 issue of Artful Blogging about sharing vs. over-sharing as a blogger then you know I recognize the fine line that I walk as I attempt to respect you, myself and the people in my life…and so far that’s a topic I’m not ready to address publicly – and when I do, in true Alli fashion, I will do so indirectly, with enough details that you understand and few enough details that the privacy of involved parties is respected.  If someone told me my life story I wouldn’t believe it if I hadn’t lived it.  Bananas I tell ya.  Bananas.)

When we experience trauma or great shocks, most of us begin to spend more time on the big questions.  As a survivor I know I am not alone in wondering why I lived when so many others have died…others whose lives had more importance – mothers and fathers with spouses and children; research doctors who make lifesaving discoveries; little kids with so much undiscovered potential; advocates; pioneers; activists.  My life is no more important than theirs…if anything it’s less important, so why did I live?  It’s something all survivors ask at some point after their experience.

WE ALL WONDER “WHY?”

When you’re a survivor or a first hand witness to tragedy you’re often left wondering “Why me,”  “What does this all mean” or “Why are we here…what’s the point of it all?”  And Sam is experiencing that first hand.  Given his life I’m surprised that he’s only now asking the question, but we all come to such things in our own time and in our own way.

I certainly hope he finds the answer to the question…and then fills me in because I’d sure as hell like to know.  Wouldn’t you? In the meantime, I think I’ll have some pizza.
