rockin' some gratitude

IT’S BEEN several months since I’ve posted a F*ck Yeah Friday because, in all honesty, I haven’t been all that grateful.  I’ve been feeling sad and disappointed and sad again.  I’ve been pissed and screaming at The Powers That Be and have been spending a lot of my time having a knock down drag out fight with The Fates.  I’m talking full on bloody cage match action with only one survivor.

ARTISTICALLY (and I know how trite this sounds) it’s been a goldmine.  I do my best artistic work when I’m going through stressful or heartbreaking times but when it comes to my writing it’s been h-a-r-d to come up with content that isn’t either self-indulgent whining about how sad I am (bor-ing) or equally crappy posts about depressing topics.

(Would you want to read about suicide rates among different professions?  Sure it might be interesting every now and then but a stream of Debbie Downer posts all week every week is not what anyone wants to read.  We all need a little sugar now and then.)

AS A FAVOR to you and to allow me an outlet for my feelings I am using my art (and more specifically, Project 52) to work through everything and keep my mopey posts to a minimum.  Yeah.  You’re welcome.

IN SHORT, I’ve been having a really hard time.  Which is precisely why it’s all the more important for me to show a little gratitude today, regardless of my current (or I should say persistent) less-than-grateful mood.

Today we are rockin’ some gratitude.

SO with that I bring you a looooooooooooong overdue edition of…

rockin' some gratitude

**  Knowing I have an exciting announcement to make to you guys very soon about something I’ve been working towards for the past two years.  **  Finding silver linings in the greyest of clouds.  **  Having an honest conversation about my art with a cherished friend who has no idea how much strength he gives me.  He once told me I was brave but when I’m around him I feel fearless, bold and free in a way I’ve never known in my life.  He truly brings out the best in me and my life and heart are better for knowing him.  He is a walking, breathing F*ck Yeah Friday in my life and I am always grateful for him.  Every day.  No matter what.  (and I know you know who you are.)  I only hope I lift him up as much as he does me…if not I’m doing a sh*t job as a friend.  **  Knowing I gave Bruce Campbell (insert fangirl squeeee! here) a chuckle when he retweeted this ridiculous photo of me (long story about why it was tweeted but it was a joke…good god, my willingness to look stupid for a laugh is ridiculous but totally worth the payoff!):

rockin' some gratitude

**  Having a potentially negative situation be resolved in a totally positive way.  What a relief.  **  Booking a beautiful wedding with a sweetheart bride at a dream venue. (Seriously.  Thorncrown Chapel.  Stunning.  Designed by F. Lloyd Wright’s student, Fay Jones.  Drool worthy architecture, for sure.)  **  Expanding horizons and new opportunities.  **  Getting ready to launch a complete site re-design for both Kisses & Chaos (which should be ready to go super-soon) & Alli Woods Frederick Photography (coming a little later, but still soon!)  **  Giving a big “Thank you!” to everyone who has liked my facebook page (500 likes.  My heart is so full.  Just, wow!) by giving away a free tarot reading to one of my lucky facebook followers this weekend.  I love giving back to you guys.  I love saying thank you for your love and support.  You guys are amazing…and for that I am always grateful.  **

WHAT are you grateful for this week?  Share your love in the comments or if you’re a fellow blogger and have your own version of FYF then feel free to share the link.  The more gratitude the better.  Let’s flood today with love and goodness.

The Death of Ophelia

BLUE skies.  Blue waters.  Blue eyes.  The blues.  These are what many think of when they think of the color blue.  I think of blue lips, blue skin, corpses and drowning, which naturally makes me think of the fair Ophelia, one of the most lachrymose and tragic of all of Shakespeare’s characters and one for whom I have always felt a kinship and profound sympathy, and not just because we have equally questionable taste in men. *insert eye roll here*

And yes,  I have seen a therapist, and yes I have a clean bill of mental health (save my anxiety, which is negligible).  Hard to believe, but 100% true.

I KNOW images of Ophelia have been done to death (no pun intended…give me some credit…my puns are better than that), from Waterhouse to Millais to countless others, but I really wanted to do something that felt more modern, more true to me and my vision and break away from the more traditional and iconic representations of the tragic heroine while also making more personal and more intimate.  I hope I accomplished my goal.

THE DEATH of Ophelia is one of Shakespeare’s most tragic.  Driven mad by Hamlet, and her love for him, she escapes her immense pain by drowning herself.

“’Tis in my memory lock’d,
And you yourself shall keep the key of it.”

“There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance. Pray you, love,
remember. And there is pansies, that’s for thoughts.

There’s fennel for you, and columbines. There’s rue for you,
and here’s some for me. We may call it herb of grace o’ Sundays…”

– Ophelia

AND with that I give you this week’s Project 52, inspired by one of the greatest heartbreaks and psychotic breaks in all of literature and theater.

12/52
Theme: Blue
Title:  “Pray you love, remember.  And there is pansies, that’s for thoughts.”

The Death of Ophelia

I WILL END with this beautiful and perfect description of Ophelia by okayophelia, which I was fortunate enough to stumble across (and which is officially on my list of daily reads…I should really share that with you guys.  I’ll put a list together for you ASAP).

“She is not someone you understand. she is someone you watch, someone you use,
someone you mourn. she is made for love but love is not made for her.
everything about her runs deeper than in you; her madness is truer, her mind
brighter and better broken, and her anguish is in her bones, not her blood.
you will never forgive her for dying, but she will always be dead forever, and
your horror means nothing to her anymore. That, more than anything is why you
still dream about her and her flowers thrown like curses. She has made
herself no longer yours to dream of, choking on her water, crawling through
her weeds, living beneath the world; her body inviolate and violable no more,
there in her resting place where no man rules.”

YEAH.  I told you it was beautiful…painfully beautiful.  Thank you, okayophelia, for such a beautiful and heartbreaking rendering of a character far more complex than she is often portrayed or given credit.

*I would like to note that creating this image was intensely personal and has actually turned out to cause a large amount of internal conflict concerning the interplay of my personal values and my art. I won’t go into the details but I will say that this is not the only version of this image I created and that I am very torn between the two.  I am trying to sort through this with a dear friend whose opinions and insights I deeply value.  Hopefully I can, with a little help from my friend, wade through these new issues and find a resolution (or at least a happy medium) that my heart and my art can both live with in contentment.

HAVE YOU ever noticed how beautiful things just silently appear?  There are no horns or choirs of angels announcing their arrival (and I’m talking true beauty here…not the manufactured lies of the sucked, tucked and silicone filled bulls*t that fills red carpet events). True beauty slips quietly into and out of view with barely a whisper and we are blessed enough to catch glimpses of it – this intangible, indefinable, ephemeral thing we call beauty.

WANT TO KNOW THE SECRET OF BEAUTIFUL THINGS?

beautiful things

Plain and Simple.

The American Venus

HIDDEN in plain sight across New York City’s landscape is a face; a face that is scattered across more than 15 sculptures, monuments and buildings throughout the city; a face that became the inspiration of artists, sculptors and silent film makers; the face of a fifteen year old girl who was once the toast of the town and is now all but forgotten…

…the face of Audrey Munson, The American Venus.

The American Venus

IN 1906 Audrey was discovered, in true New York fashion, while walking down the street by photographer Ralph Draper who introduced her to his friend and fellow artist Isidore Konti, who managed to convince Audrey (and her reluctant mother) to allow the young girl to model.  Little did Draper and Konti, let alone Audrey, know that she was about to become one of the most precious and prolific models and socialites of her day.

The American Venus

AUDREY’S star began to rise as she modeled for more and more artists, her visage appearing on more and more buildings, fountains and monuments around the city.  Everyone knew who Audrey Munson was.

The American Venus

IN 1916 she decided to expand her horizons, moving to California where she went on to star in four silent films, one of which, a film called “Inspiration,” was the first movie to show full female nudity. Out of all the films only one, “Purity,” has survived.

AFTER her short film career, Audrey left California, moving back to New York and into a boarding house with her mother….a move that proved to be fatal both figuratively and literally.

The American Venus

THE BOARDING house was owned by one Dr. Walter Wilkins.  Dr. Wilkins quickly fell in love with the infamous muse.  Dr. Wilkins wife, Julia, grew jealous of her husband’s affection for the model and evicted the mother and daughter from the home.  Shortly after, Julia was found dead, a victim of murder.

SUSPICION fell on Dr. Wilkins as well as Audrey, who had disappeared along with her mother.   Wanted for questioning, a nationwide manhunt for the model (and possibly murderous mistress) began.  Audrey and her mother resurfaced in Toronto, Canada, where they were questioned by police.  Satisfied with their answers, Audrey was cleared of all suspicion.  Dr. Wilkins was not as fortunate.  He was found guilty of murdering his wife and was sentenced to death but hanged himself in his jail cell before his execution could be carried out.

The American Venus

THE PUBLICITY from the crime put a prompt end to Audrey’s career.  Shunned by the community that once adored her, she moved to upstate New York with her mother by her side.

AFTER a failed suicide attempt in 1922, Munson became reclusive and her behavior erratic, so much so that in 1931 she wound up in court before a judge who declared her insane (it is widely believed she suffered from depression and schizophrenia).  She was committed to an asylum where she lived out the rest of her days, passing away in 1996 at the age of 105.

The American Venus

A LONG and tragic life that had once been filled with so much possibility; a woman who contributed so much beauty to the world of art; a name almost completely erased from history but a face that will never fade from view as long as New York City stands: The American Venus, Audrey Munson keeps watch; her anonymous beauty still inspiring awe in those who gaze upon her as they walk down the busy New York streets where she once lived and dreamed.

Spring Gardens

OKAY…so Hello Spring Garden! is a bit of a tease, because absolutely jack has bloomed here, save a small handful of daffodils in a ditch on the side of the road.  It’s still cold.  Not as cold as it was, but it’s still cold.

But spring is just around the corner and I can feel it in my bones.

SO in an attempt to encourage Mother Nature to ease up on the freezing cold and snow and let the blooming begin I’m sharing a few images from last year’s garden.

FINGERS crossed that she’ll listen and the air will be filled with the smell of flowers and the buzzing of bees sooner rather than later.  As much as I love winter (and I do LOVE winter in a big way – sweaters and snow and boots and coats and snuggles and fires…well…you get the idea.) I also like to shoot outside without my camera going haywire from the insanely cold temperatures.  So I’d love it if you’d join me in saying…

HELLO SPRING GARDEN!

Spring Gardens

Spring Gardens

NOW if there were only some way to convince Mother Nature to let spring last until autumn and just bypass the horrible, sweltering, sweat-soaked months that are summer,  I’d be in complete heaven.  Let’s be honest…four seasons are totally overrated.  I’m fine with three.  Three’s a good number.  But for now, right now, my camera and I are ready for spring…and so is my spring garden.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SEE BLOOM THIS SPRING?

HOPES?  Dreams?  That money tree we’ve all been praying for?  Feel free to share your aspirations for spring in the comments.
