Five Ways to Use Lavender

I KNOW it’s hard to believe with all the snow we’ve been having here stateside but spring and all her glory is just around the corner.  And what do you think of when you hear the word “spring?”  Flowers…which brings us to the miracle working uber-bloom that is lavender and its ass-kicking essential oil.

I BEGAN using lavender essential oil religiously with all my clients when I had my massage therapy practice in Houston and never had a single complaint…in fact they all loved how they smelled after the session, men included.  Since then I always keep a bottle of lavender essential oil in my house.

Lavender is Mother Nature’s little purple miracle.

ITS USES are many and border on magical.  Seriously.  You’re about to fall in love with lavender essential oil.  It has about a billion different uses, but since a list of a billion things would be a total bitch for me to write and for you to read I’ll just give you my top five favorites.

Five Ways to Use Lavender *

Five Ways to Use Lavender

1)  Bacteria Buster

Lavender is antibacterial.  Yup.  It kills germs.  Many people have developed an allergy to topical antibacterial ointments (like Neosporin) and lavender is a natural alternative to use on minor cuts and scrapes.  Apply a few dabs to the area after washing it and you’re done.  Obviously this does not apply to serious injuries, so please use common sense.

Make sure the oil you’re using is pure, undiluted therapeutic grade essential oil (look for lavendula augustifolia or lavendula officinalis) and make sure to do a small patch test on healthy skin to check for irritation, sensitivities and allergies before you start applying it to any little cuts…you don’t want to find out you have an allergy by introducing it directly into your bloodstream.  That would be bad. *(This is were I tell you to make sure to read the disclaimer at the bottom of the post because even though lavender is usually safe and well-tolerated by most there are still some safety issues you need to be aware of before use…so make sure you read it.)

2)  Sweet Slumber

Need some rest?  Lavender helps calm the central nervous system and a calm central nervous system means rest and relaxation.  You can place some lavender essential oil on a tissue and place it inside your pillowcase or add a few drops to a warm bath just before bedtime.  One of my favorite treats is adding a spritz of Bath & Body Works sleep pillow mist to my sheets and pillowcases just before I hit the hay.  It truly smells divine and knocks me out like you wouldn’t believe.  It works like a charm.

Five Ways to Use Lavender

3)  Headache Helper

Grab your bottle of lavender essential oil and dab a little on each temple at the first signs of a headache.  Prone to headaches and know that a glass bottle of essential oil in your purse is a smelly accident waiting to happen?  Grab a tin of Badger Balm’s organic headache soother and keep it in your bag for on-the-go treatments.

4)  Bugs Be Gone

There are several essential oils that pesky biting bugs like mosquitoes can’t stand and lavender is one of them.  You can apply it directly to your pulse points or you can make your own bug spray for better coverage and more effective protection.

5)  Skin Smoother

Mix a few drops of lavender essential oil with a nourishing carrier oil like jojoba, grapeseed or, my favorite, extra virgin olive oil and use as a body moisturizer before bed.  Not only will you smell great and have soft skin but lavender is great at healing scars and reducing stretch marks.  Ba-bam!  Beauty trifecta. (Using a carrier oil to dilute the lavender is also a great way to apply it if you have sensitive skin or find that applying it directly causes skin irritation)

Five Ways to Use Lavender

STILL CRAVING more lavender-y goodness?  A quick look through the internet and you’ll find those other billion uses I mentioned.  I’m so not even kidding. From lavender infused sugar and lavender iced coffees and sodas to topical acne treatments and scented sachets for your drawer of unmentionables – lavender kicks some serious ass.

If you have any tips or tricks of your own, please share them in the comments.  I’d love to hear them…the more the merrier.

*  PLEASE NOTE:  Pregnant and nursing women should exercise caution when using any and all essential oils…including lavender which, though one of the safest essential oils, is an emmenagogue, (which means it may encourage menstruation) which can increase the risk of a miscarriage.  Talk to your doctor before using essential oils.  Remember: just because something’s natural doesn’t mean it can’t harm you.  Mercury and arsenic are natural but you sure as hell don’t want to consume them.  Toxic elements of the periodic table not convincing enough for you?  Look at bears.  Bears are natural and they’ll rip your face off.  So stop thinking “natural” is the same as “safe” and “non-toxic.”  It’s not.  And just so we’re clear, I am not a doctor and am certainly not crazy enough to diagnose or advise you on any medical issues.  Always consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions regarding your health and medications.  This post is not intended to replace medical advice or treatments.  If you’re seriously hurt or ill don’t rub yourself down with lavender oil and think you’ll get better.  Go to the freakin’ doctor.  If it’s an emergency then get off the damn internet and call 911.  I know you’re all bright enough to know this, but the internet being what it is and people being what they are it’s necessary for me to state the obvious.  For a really fun read check out my full legal disclaimer here.  It’s a good time.  Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

miracles and the apocalypse

IT SEEMS the Project 52 group is hell bent on choosing happy themes every week, which I’m convinced is some sadistic attempt to drive me insane.  As we all know I’m not the kind of artist that shoots rainbows and unicorns out my ass.  That’s just not how my imagination works.  Every now and then I’ll do a bright, happy piece but they are, admittedly, rare and usually involve the juxtaposition of something in ruin or decay against a beautiful backdrop (case in point).

MY IMAGINATION is a little dark, a little twisted and would probably cause psychiatrists to raise an eyebrow or two and question whether I’m fit to interact with the universe at large.  But I like it that way.  My imagination is my favorite playmate.  It keeps me entertained…of course it’s also the source of sleepless nights caused by zombie movie marathons which tend to send my overactive imagination into overdrive.

In those moments my imagination transforms from cute and creepy like The Living Dead Dolls into Chucky…but that’s an entirely different story best left for another day.

BACK to Project 52’s subversive attempt to drive me into a creative land populated with gum drops, daisy chains and the laughter of children…and their ultimate failure to transform me into a human Care Bear:

NATURALLY I have to twist their cheery themes a bit to fit my aesthetic, visions and daydreams.  And I must confess it takes quite a bit of twisting.  It’s a challenge to find the dark side of their themes, but I do my damnedest to create work that is true to my vision without straying from the topic.

SO FROM THE DEPTHS of my warped but loving little heart I give you my interpretation of Project 52’s week six theme, Paradise, and week seven’s theme, Focus – miracles and the apocalypse, though not necessarily in that order.

6/52
Theme: Paradise
Title:  “Paradise Lost”

7/52
Theme: Focus
Title: “Performing A Miracle”

miracles and the apocalypse

* I know it’s hard to see at this size – this was created with the intention of being viewed as a large print (12 x 12 or larger) as I am using many of the images as part of a solo exhibition later this year  – but the black “thing” on my chest are red, irritated sutures that run from the base of my sternum to my clavicle.  Since it’s an important part of the piece and it’s a detail that gets lost here I wanted to fill you in.*

It’s not too late for you to jump in and start your own Project 52.

NOT SURE if you have the chops?  If it’s for you?  I suggest you swing by My Four Hens (the free group I belong to) and check out her weekly faves.  You’ll see a broad range of styles and imagery and skill levels represented.  Everyone is welcome.  Shit.  They allow me to participate and I’m most certainly the dark and brooding aesthetic black sheep of the group.

I HOPE some of you will decide to join in the fun.  It is a challenge but it’s well worth it.  If you’re new to photography and have any questions about editing software and the like feel free to shoot me an email.  I’ll do my best to help you get started and point you towards some resources.

hey designers

Hey designers, Modcloth wants you!

MODCLOTH’S Make The Cut Contest is back and in full swing and they want you and all those fabulous ideas rolling around in the beautiful noggin of yours.  The theme?  ‘Prints’ Charming.  (Not to be confused with Adam Ant’s “Prince Charming”.)

What in the world is Make The Cut, you ask?

hey designers

MODCLOTH’S Make The Cut program is a design contest (and a recurring one at that!) where Modcloth invites you and members of their community to become the designer.  The contests run the gamut from garments and graphics to fabric prints.

Modcloth puts the power in your hands, democratizing fashion by producing clothing designed by the people who buy it…people like you!

SO IF YOU’VE DREAMED of becoming a fashion designer or have a passion for textiles then this contest is for you, darling, and I strongly suggest you take advantage of the opportunity.  What do you have to lose?  YOU can become a designer at ModCloth!

How does it work?

hey designers

YOUR MISSION, should you choose to accept it, is to design a new print for a private label dress.  That means you design the pattern which will be featured on one of Modcloth’s dresses (which is already in production).  Once the submission period is closed the Modcloth Creative Team takes a gander at all the glory and narrows the selection down to 20 patterns.  Those 20 designs will then be sent to the guest judge, Amanda Needham, Costume Designer for the much beloved show Portlandia.

AMANDA cuts it down to the top ten finalists which will be posted on Modcloth’s Be The Buyer page where we can all go and vote for our favorite one.  The design with the most votes gets the glory and the winner’s pattern will be seen and worn far and wide.

YOU HAVE TWO DAYS to get your submission in so shake a tail feather, my dears.  This is too fun to pass up!  Here’s the timeline breakdown.

• Contest is Live Now!
• End of Submission Period: Friday 02/14/14
• Launch voting on Be The Buyer: Monday 03/03/14
• End voting on Be The Buyer: Monday 03/10/14
• Winner announced on ModCloth Blog (winner will be contacted personally): Wednesday 3/12/14

Send your entry in now and good luck!
