Christina-Hendricks

I LIKE MAD MEN, I like men and I am, admittedly, on the fence about Christina Hendricks.  But I’m in love with this open letter to men she wrote for the July 2011, edition of Esquire Magazine. (well…99% in love. She mentions her love of the word “panties,” which I despise. I hate how it sounds. I prefer “skivvies,” “bloomers,” “knickers” or “unmentionables.” I also hate the words slaw and moist, which is neither here nor there, but they all sound disgusting.)

MEN TAKE NOTE.  She knows what she’s talking about…apart from the aforementioned panties.

We love your body. If we’re in love with you, we love your body. Your potbelly, everything. Even if you’re insecure about something, we love your body. You feel like you’re not this or that? We love your body. We embrace everything. Because it’s you.

Speaking of your body, you don’t understand the power of your own smell. Any woman who is currently with a man is with him partly because she loves the way he smells. And if we haven’t smelled you for a day or two and then we suddenly are within inches of you, we swoon. We get light-headed. It’s intoxicating. It’s heady.

We remember forever what you say about the bodies of other women. When you mention in passing that a certain woman is attractive — could be someone in the office, a woman on the street, a celebrity, any woman in the world, really — your comment goes into a steel box and it stays there forever. We will file the comment under “Women He Finds Attractive.” It’s not about whether or not we approve of the comment. It’s about learning what you think is sexy and how we might be able to convey it. It’s about keeping our man by knowing what he likes.

We also remember everything you say about our bodies, be it good or bad. Doesn’t matter if it’s a compliment. Could be just a comment. Those things you say are stored away in the steel box, and we remember these things verbatim. We remember what you were wearing and the street corner you were standing on when you said it.

Never complain about our friends — even if we do. No matter how many times we say a friend of ours is driving us crazy, you are not to pile on. Not because it offends us. But because it adds to the weight that we carry around about her.

Remember what we like. When I first started dating my husband, I had this weird fascination with the circus and clowns and old carnival things and sideshow freaks and all that. About a month after we started dating, he bought me this amazing black-and-white photo book on the circus in the 1930s, and I started sobbing. Which freaked him out. I thought, Oh, my God, I mentioned this three or four weeks ago and talked about it briefly, but he was really listening to me. And he actually went out and researched and found this thing for me. It was amazing.

We want you to order Scotch. It’s the most impressive drink order. It’s classic. It’s sexy. Such a rich color. The glass, the smell. It’s not watered down with fruit juice. It’s Scotch. And you ordered it.

Stand up, open a door, offer a jacket. We talk about it with our friends after you do it. We say, “Can you believe he stood up when I approached the table?” It makes us feel important. And it makes you important because we talk about it.

No shorts that go below the knee. The ones almost like capri pants, the ones that hover somewhere between the kneecap and the calf? Enough with those shorts. They are the most embarrassing pants in the world. They should never be worn. No woman likes those.

Also, no tank tops. In public at least. A tank top is underwear. You’re walking around in your underwear. Too much.

No man should be on Facebook. It’s an invasion of everyone’s privacy. I really cannot stand it.

christina-hendricks-quote

You don’t know this, but when we come back from a date, we feel awkward about that transition from our cute outfit into sexy lingerie. We don’t know how to do this gracefully. It’s embarrassing. We have to find a way to slip into another room, put on the outfit as if it all happened very easily, and then come out and it’s: Look at me! Look at the sexy thing I’ve done! For you, it’s the blink of an eye. It’s all very embarrassing. Just so you know.

Panties is a wonderful word. When did you stop saying “panties”? It’s sexy. It’s girlie. It’s naughty. Say it more.

About ogling: The men who look, they really look. It doesn’t insult us. It doesn’t faze us, really. It’s just — well, it’s a little infantile. Which is ironic, isn’t it? The men who constantly stare at our breasts are never the men we’re attracted to.

There are better words than beautiful. Radiant, for instance. It’s an underused word. It’s a very special word. “You are radiant.” Also, enchanting, smoldering, intoxicating, charming, fetching.

Marriage changes very little. The only things that will get a married man laid that won’t get a single man laid are adultery and whores. Intelligence and humor (and your smell) are what get you laid. That’s what got you laid when you were single. That’s what gets you laid when you’re married. Everything still works in marriage: especially intelligence and humor. Because the sexiest thing is to know you.”

Christina Hendricks, Esquire Magazine (July, 2011)

I DON’T KNOW about you, but I think she nailed it.  And how.

ONE OF THE PERKS of being the art editor for All Things Girl Magazine is that I get to meet an array of talented (not to mention sweet-natured…we’re delightfully diva-free at ATG) female artists and showcase their captivating creations.  Photographer Lizthayra Carreras is one such artist.

HER PHOTOGRAPHS are ethereal with a subtle, surreal quality.  Her images are a perfect reflection of her personality, which you get to explore right…

now.

1) In 10 words or less tell us what makes you so freakin’ awesome…and don’t be modest. Let ‘er rip.

LC:    I’m a strange word with multiple meanings and I do believe in magic.

2) Did you (or do you currently) have an imaginary friend(s)? If so, tell us a little about him/her/it/them.

LC:    The thing is that I don’t believe that they are imaginary at all…if I can see them in my mind aren’t they real enough? They are just characters with their own voice.

3) Do you believe in ghosts?

LC:    Definitely.  Ghosts, spiritual beings, they are all the same to me.

4) What one thing scares the ever-loving crap out of you more than anything else in the whole wide world?

LC:  First, becoming someone I hate. You know, like people who follow the masses, those who want what everyone wants and live someone else’s dreams instead of theirs. It’s so easy to get brain washed these days. Second, a tsunami.

5) Sunrise, sunset, new moon or full moon?

LC:    Sunset. Maybe is because I’m from the Caribbean…but sunsets can be a wonderful display of textures and colours.

6) If you had to live the rest of your life inside one book or movie, what would it be and why?

LC:    Wonderful question! It would be Alice in Wonderland. Why? It’s very simple, “a world of our own”, where there’s no logic and everything can be anything we want it to be. That magical place where we dream awake…wouldn’t that be amazing?

Photographer Lizthayra Carreras

7) It’s the zombie apocalypse. The person you love more than anyone, anywhere, ever has been bitten by one of the walking dead. It is inevitable that they will turn into a flesh-eating monster. What do you do?

LC:    LOL!  In that case that person would not be the person I once met so I think I would run away as fast as I can, and of course, with a great amount of pain on my chest and tears in my eyes but life must go on, don’t you think?

Here’s a little space that’s all yours. Do with it what you will. Draw a picture, tell us about a current project, pet peeve, new product, write a haiku about unicorns, recount your bigfoot sighting…you get the idea. It’s all yours.

LC:    Well, I’m an animal lover. I have a dog and a cat that sleep with me in my bed and I have to admit that I treat them as if they were my children, because they are. I really love to take pictures of my two girls and sadly they don’t enjoy it at all. My head is always above in the clouds.  You could say that I am a dreamer or that I haven’t grow up yet, you decide.  Photography is my passion, with pictures I can show the way I feel or see the world around us. For me it’s very important to make people feel something when they see one of my pictures because the ultimate goal is for them to connect with me in some way, or maybe get them to connect with themselves.

As of now, I am currently working on my third photography book and with this next publication I intend to compile my best work until now. What can I say, everyday is a new beginning and I’m still learning.

– Lizthayra Carreras

I am a 33 year old freelance artist from San Juan, Puerto Rico.  In 2008 I started my own company, Lizthayra Carreras Photography, and since early 2012 have been working as a freelance contributor at Getty Images.

Since photography has become more than a passion to me, I recently published two photography books that caught the attention of MyPublisher Editors. Consequently they added the black & white edition to their official book catalog along with great reviews. In early 2013 some of my work was selected by Amazon Publishing Editors to be the book cover for Courtney Eldridge’s latest novel, the first book written under the umbrella of Saccades Project, Ghost Time.

My pictures talk about life, fashion, dreams, persons and special moments that make this journey more exciting and give us a feeling of hope and adventure.  You can find some of my latest work on the Pages link icon of my portfolio.

fayetteville-underground

A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO I had an interview with The Fayetteville Underground, an amazing local gallery full of talented artists.  I was nervous as all get out and the odds were stacked against me with several other photographers they were considering as members interviewing after me.  I was n-e-r-v-o-u-s.

JUST ABOUT EVERY ARTIST on the planet gets antsy when their work is being reviewed, critiqued and judged.  Yes you get valuable feedback, but when your art is judged you are judged since artists’ creations are essentially extensions of themselves.  There are some that are able to separate themselves from their work.

I am not one of those lucky individuals.

SO WHEN I TELL YOU the interview and subsequent time the board spent in deliberations was a hair-pulling, nail-biting, anxiety inducing experience, I’m being extremely literal.  For realsies.  My cuticles look like they’ve been involved in a series of tragic whittling accidents – they are a seriously gross mess.

LAST WEDNESDAY while driving down the freeway, Mischa in my lap (getting carsick, I might add) on our way to house sit my phone rang.

I GOT IN.

fayetteville-underground

AS IT TURNS OUT they quite liked my work and welcomed me with open arms.  I think my exceptionally professional words were “Shut up!  Seriously?  Holy crap!  Thank you!”  Clearly I am the queen of couth, the epitome of calm, cool and collected. (insert eye roll here)

MY FIRST EXHIBIT as a member of The Fayetteville Underground is today.  I’m insanely excited.  For those who are local, please feel free to stop by anytime between 5 and 8pm and enjoy some amazing creations from some uber-talented artists before you head out to watch the fireworks.  I am honored to be included in such an incredible group of artists.

AND JUST IN CASE you’re in need of last minute Fourth of July party décor, make sure to check out my free July 4th download from a couple of years ago.  Perfect to trim a table or string on the wall.

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!  And thank you to all who gave their lives over the years so we can be free.  Now let’s go celebrate by blowing things up, shall we?
