world ufo day

SO it was brought to my attention that July 2 was World UFO Day.  WTF?!?  How did I not know about this?  Why didn’t anyone tell me?  I mean, I know the Roswell UFO Festival is roughly around this time each year (a festival that is TOTALLY on my to-do list – it sounds amazing!  Parades, parties and costume contests all wrapped up with a UFO/alien themed bow? Yes, please.) but I had no idea there was an actual World UFO Day.

This is a massive oversight on my part.  I’m clearly falling down on the “come for the weirdness” aspect of Kisses & Chaos.  But no more.  So let’s raise a glass to all things beloved and bizarre and celebrate a belated…

ODDS & ENDS

UFOs: Generals, Pilots and Government Official Go on the Record, by investigative reporter Leslie Kean, is a fascinating read full of detailed first hand accounts by reputable people (is an Air Force colonel, former head of the British Defense Ministry Nick Pope and the support of former White House chief of staff John Podesta reputable enough?) well versed in what should and shouldn’t be zipping around in our skies.  If you want a book full of well documented events and proof that there’s something we can’t explain in our airspace,  if you want a smoking gun then this is a must-read.  (Not big on books?   If you want the super-dooper-uber-abridged version of the book you can check out Leslie Kean’s interview with Stephen Colbert on the Colbert Report.)

A less credible, but equally intriguing book (if the tale is actually true) is Witnessed; The True Story of the Brooklyn Bridge UFO Abduction by Budd Hopkins.  The book recounts the incredible tale of a woman who was abducted out the fifth floor window of her Brooklyn apartment by a craft of unknown origin.

The event was witnessed by dozens of people whose vehicles inexplicably and simultaneously stalled on the Brooklyn Bridge, one of whom was, supposedly, a UN Ambassador who refuses to identify himself (which is why I find this story suspect – none of the witnesses nor the victim are willing to id themselves).  But if it’s true, it’s a truly amazing event…so while I’m on the fence as to the veracity of the tale, I still recommend the book because it’s fascinating to entertain the possibility.

You know I have a couple of UFO stories of my own – daytime sightings of objects that were most certainly not like any aircraft we currently have and witnessed by other people.  Let me know if you’d like to hear about them and I’ll happily share my tales (such as they are) with you in a later post.

Have you seen anything in the skies that you can’t explain?  Had a close encounter?  Do you want to believe or are you convinced that UFOs are all swamp gas, weather balloons and the planet Venus?  You know I can’t get enough of this stuff so I’d love to hear your stories and opinions.  Feel free to share them in the comments section below.

PS – Just a reminder since this subject seems to be one that generates a ton of division – make sure your comments are respectful and constructive. We’re about love here so if you have nothing nice to say…well…you know the rest. Healthy debate and differing opinions are always welcome as long they’re done with kindness and respect. I know all of you regular readers are kind and respectful but with topics such as this I like to put a little reminder out since it may bring in some first time readers who aren’t familiar with our policies around here. And for any trolls who can’t resist the temptation, you’re not welcome here. I like to keep this corner of the interweb friendly and welcoming and drama-free.

Patriotism Means Blowing Things Up

I love the Fourth of July.  Not only because it’s a celebration of my nation’s birth (sure we have our problems – what country doesn’t (except maybe Canada…or maybe they do and they’re just smart enough not to air their dirty laundry) – but all in all it’s a damn fine place to live and I’m more than happy to celebrate it) but I also love any holiday that involves huge, brightly colored, sparkly explosives.

Get me around fireworks and I turn into a 5 year old, all giggly and non-stop smiles.  The way you can feel the tickly boom in your stomach and how simply beautiful they are as they twinkle and dance like giant fiery flowers blooming in the night sky – I freakin’ love ‘em.

PATRIOTISM MEANS BLOWING THINGS UP

PATRIOTISM MEANS BLOWING THINGS UP

For those of you who missed this the first time I shared it oh so many years ago and are in need of some last minute party decorations, I’m reposting my free Fourth of July “Stars & Stripes Forever Banner” for you to download, print, cut out and string up.  It’s perfect décor for a snack table, porch railing or to hang from a mantelpiece (because as much as it sucks, sometimes bad weather strikes during outdoor celebrations).

And you see how it looks like it’s covered in glitter?  It’s not.  That’s just part of my magical powers, making things look glittery.  If you want to punch it up a notch you could totally add your own glitter to them, but since we are working with a time crunch here, I did the hard part for you – all the glittery glam without all the mess and time-munching hassle.

I hope you have an amazing Fourth of July.  May we all take a moment to pay respect to the people on both sides who lost their lives and may we pause to appreciate (and then celebrate) our freedom.  Sometimes I think we forget just how good we have it here.

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!

AND BE PLEASE CAREFUL.  LET’S KEEP ALL OUR FINGERS AND HANDS IN TACT, SHALL WE?

I love you more

I am fully aware I have been scattered lately but I had no idea I have been so scattered that I completely forgot to share week 22 of Project 52 and skipped right to weeks 23 and 24.  Oops!

And while not my most artistic pieces, they are certainly some of my most dear, which is appropriate given the week’s theme was “My Life.”  I’m pretty sure you can all guess who the subjects of these photos are.  Yeah you can…because I’m predictable and we all know the sun rises and sets around a particular furball around here.

Yup.  You guessed it.  Mischa.  So week 22’s photos are of Mischa and the most recent addition to the family, Lavender (formerly the neighbor’s cat…long story involving their cat-hating dog and a cat with nowhere to go that was standing with her nosed pressed to glass of the back door as the temperatures and the snow fell this past winter).

Mischa has been with me for fifteen years.  He’s been my best friend and seen me through the hardest moments of my life as well as my greatest joys.  And now with Lavender he has a…well…I’m not sure what she is to him…they act like brothers and sisters, snuggling one moment and squabbling the next, so I suppose siblings they are.

Mischa hasn’t had a fury buddy to pal around with since we lost his big, 100+ pounds of nothing but hair canine brother, Lakota, to liver failure resulting from cancer in 2006 and he took the loss hard.  Fortunately Lakota, being the good natured, dutiful and loving herding dog of a big brother that he was, came back about once a week for a few months after his death to hang out and play with Mischa (and if you’ve never seen a cat hauling ass and wrestling around on the floor with a dog you can’t see but can totally smell (Lakota was cute but boy did that boy have a funk all his own) then you’ve missed out on one of life’s funnier and more bizarre sights) and it really seemed to help Mischa with his grieving.

To see Mischa have a new non-human playmate to wrestle with and love on makes my heart happy…and knowing that Lavender is now in a home that is free from the emotional and physical distress she faced in a house full of cat-hating dogs makes my heart doubly happy.  It’s a win-win-win.  A trifecta of winning-ness.

They are two of my favorite parts of my life and everyday I am thankful I get to share it with them.  My life wouldn’t be complete without them.

true blood tuesday

IN the same vein (sorry…couldn’t resist the pun) of Mad Men Monday, I feel it only right to honor the final season of one my other favorite soon to be back in the coffin shows, True Blood with True Blood Tuesday where I will be posting my favorite quote from the last week’s episode.

And was there a better quote last Sunday than Arlene Bellefleur’s Fangtasia freak out.  Seriously.  That woman has been through some insane sh*t (sadly I can honestly say, vampires and werewolves aside – at least to the best of my knowledge, we have far too much in common in regards to the seriously f*cked up crap that seems to stalk us and fall into our laps like a giant crazy sh*t magnet than I care to admit).  I, for one, was proud to finally see her step into her power and try to take control of the situation (something she’s not prone to do).  Even though she’s not a natural redhead I now officially welcome her into our fireball fold because she finally displayed the spunk and feistiness for which we redheads are renowned.  Welcome to the ginger club, Arlene.   Way to step up and try to do what needed to be done.

HERE’S TO HOPING YOU MAKE IT OUT OF THAT “FUCKING VAMPIRE BAR” ALIVE & WELL.

We’re pulling for you.

the sound of longing

sound of longing

FOR some reason June always seems like a busy month with barely a moment to just sit back and relax.  This month I had my first solo exhibit, .transmutations., at Fayetteville Underground; I had a ton of wedding photos to edit for one of the sweetest couples;  I spent a morning speaking about creativity and inspiration with some young writers who are participating in Kidswrite (they asked lots of questions and I didn’t get laughed at so I consider it a wild success);  there was the Small Town Security Take Over of Kisses & Chaos last week as well as my birthday on the 25th (which was actually really fun – details coming soon).  It may not sound like much but all those things are time intensive and boy was I ever busy.  I blinked and June was gone.

So just incase your June was anything like mine, I hereby give you permission to relax by putting your feet up and enjoying this ton of entertaining, educational, beautiful, weird and random stuff I came across on the glorious interweb this month.

So I now leave you to fall down the proverbial rabbit hole with these Kisses & Chaos approved…

LITTLE LINKS O’ LOVE

“American Horror Story: Freakshow” teaser.  Enough said.  *  Sick and tired of the internet’s Big Brother approach to advertising?  You can opt out of internet companies’ uber-intrusive tracking.  Truth.  Browse and shop in peace, my children.  *

magic pen from the future

*  An ink pen that lets you scan a color and then custom blends its inks to IMMEDIATELY produce that very same color inside that very same pen for you to write with…immediately?  Holy.  Sh*t.  Welcome to the future.  *  Delta Airlines’ new 80s inspired inflight safety film is sheer genius.  ALF putting on an oxygen mask?  Check.  *  We’ve all heard you should never wash your jeans.  But did you know you should be freezing them?  Yeah.  Me neither.  *  I’m actually considering revisiting my makeup brand of choice from when I was 12 years old – Wet n’ Wild – thanks to this foundation review (and for the record, I NEVER wear foundation because I’m super-white & it always looks awful on me but…well…just look at her photos and you’ll see why my interest is piqued).  *

California-Bump

One night on the Colbert Report it was mentioned that a book, California (a critically acclaimed novel about love in the apocalypse by Edan Lepucki) isn’t available on Amazon, nor will it be, because (and it was a long explanation so I won’t recount it here) Amazon is destroying the careers of lesser known authors through their business model.  The book sounds amazing and we should all buy a copy and tell Amazon to suck it– by making it a best-seller through an independent book seller…which you can do by clicking here.  *  To say I’m in love with Romany Caravan’s repurposed, perfectly rusted, industrial nightlights is putting it mildly.  They make me wish I was afraid of the dark.  *

vardo

*  And while I was searching for Romany Caravan the company I found a ton of Romany Caravans, the vardos.  I’m a nomadic gypsy by nature and have wanted a vardo for roughly twenty years.  This is why.  *  So I’m writing this on Friday, but you’re reading this on Monday which makes this a bit of a Schrodinger’s Cat moment since, as of right now (right now being the moment I’m writing this) I haven’t decided if I’m going to this tomorrow night or not which means I have both attended and not attended simultaneously…but I am intrigued by the concept behind NY based artist Sondra R. Perry’s performance and video installation, New Theories on Anti-Gravity.  Curiosity & love of art may win out over my introversion.  *  HSPs (or Highly Sensitive People) can be a challenge to understand for non-HSPs.  We process sensory information differently which can make us a little tricky to understand.  Odds are you have at least one HSP in your life.  Learn more about HSPs and what makes us tick (and maybe help you get less annoyed with us in the process) *

moss bathmat

*  A moss bathmat that lives off the moisture from your post-shower wetness?!  Oh hell yes.  And you can even make your own and avoid the $200 price tag of the fancy store bought mat.  *  Watching a chimp being released into the wild is amazing, but watching one stop to thank Jane Goodall (one of my lifelong heroes) with a hug is guaranteed to make you tear up.  Just beautiful.  *  Sephora had the gall to discontinue their amazing liquid eyeliner (and the only liner I’ve been using for the past 5 years), Long Lasting Eyeliner.  I’ve always been asked how I get such purrrfect cat eyes and that liner was key.  I’ve yet to find its equal.  So I’m trying to start a one woman campaign to bring it back by tweeting, emailing, posting, etc, begging them for its swift return. If you’ve ever tried this product then you understand the agony this is causing. Liquid gold for $12 a bottle. It’s a god damn tragedy I tell ya.  Feel free to support my vanity and join me in my efforts to bring it back.  If Family Guy can be brought back after being cancelled, so can my eyeliner, damn it.  *  Finally, on this last day of June, I want to end the day with two songs:

1) a soft, summery, holding hands while laying naked under the stars and watching fireflies dance between kisses song , “The Sea and The Rhythm” by Iron & Wine and

*THE SEA and THE RHYTHM – VIDEO*

2) a haunting, hypnotic, heartbreaking, song that is the auditory equivalent of a dimly lit, candle-filled room where the air is thick with incense and the sound of longing and the old wooden floors have been stained with a century of blood and tears – “We Hit A Wall” by Chelsea Wolfe.
