thanks for the memories

TODAY MARKS THE ten year anniversary of the death of my hero, my first and lifelong crush, the funniest man in showbiz and one of the few who could hold his own in a duet with Bing Crosby – my beloved Bob Hope.

I DON’T THINK I ever missed a single USO show since the age of 2, though I freely admit to never (nor will I ever) watching a Bob Hope Chrysler Classic (I take a pass on any and all things golf related)

I HAVE THE COMPLETE collection of his Colgate Comedy Hour and if you think radio shows can’t be funny (and I don’t mean Howard Stern funny…I mean real humor) then you should give it a listen.

thanks for the memories

WHEN TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES runs a Bob Hope marathon it’s national holiday as far as I’m concerned.  I park my happy ass in front of the boob tube and laugh and sing all day.  Work be damned.  But one thing always bothered me…why did Bing always get the girl?  Oh, the injustice of it all.  Shame on you Dorothy Lamour, shame on you.

I KEEP a photo of him, which used to be in my massage practice (he was a huge advocate of massage therapy…I always considered him the patron saint of the industry), displayed with love in my home.  Every time I see it I smile.

AND EVERY SINGLE family member knows that I want his duet with Shirley Ross, ‘Thanks For The Memories,” played at my funeral and that if they don’t do it I will fully haunt their asses.

HIS PASSING left a hole in my heart.  I still miss him oh so much.  The world lost some of its sparkle that day, some of its laughter, some of its soul.

SO HERE’S TO YOU, BOB.  Thank you for the joy you spread.  Thank you for the laughter you shared.  Thank you for the hope you gave.  You made a difference in so many lives.  And for all that and more, I thank you.  You are missed…And thanks for the memories.

talented musicians

STRINGS.  Cellos, violins, viola, bass – I love them all.  “Learn to play cello” has been on my list of dreams since I can remember.  The way they resonate, hum, like sirens singing to our souls.  Their beauty is unmatched.

THE TALENTED MUSICIANS who masterfully play, are hidden from the masses, drowned out in an ocean of generic pop music, a soundscape of auto-tuned horrors and talentless hacks that overrun the airwaves and internet.  Their soul stirring compositions and arrangements will move the hearts of anyone willing to sit still for a moment and listen.

IT IS WITH INFINITE LOVE that I share these amazing talents with you.  I sing their praises from the rooftops, Hallelujah! and thank them for the beauty they give us, their hearts which they so bravely share through their music, their voices which sing through their strings. Amen.

sex in an elevator

I FINALLY CAVED and watched The New Girl last night on Netflix.  (I have a serious love/hate relationship with Zooey Deschanel the reasons for which are varied and many.)

CUT TO A SCENE with her character mashing the emergency stop button in an elevator so she can get busy with her new boyfriend.  This act of contrived passion left me with a burning question:

What really happens when that drawer-droppin’ button is pushed?

sex in an elevator

SERIOUSLY.  Do people really do this?  What happens?  Is it illegal (I know sex in a public elevator isn’t legal…I’m talking about the button-pushing)?  Is anyone notified that an alarm is sounding?  Are there really no repercussions?  Really?  How are all these fictional public copulators with all their passionate button pushing not getting caught?

I ALWAYS assumed it was like pulling the emergency cable on a train – a conductor or ticket taker shows up, finds out what’s wrong and then acts accordingly.  Is there no such a protocol for elevators?  And if there’s not, then why bother having the f***ing button!  What purpose does it serve if no one responds to it?!?!?!  This is maddening!

I must know.

FOR THE LOVE of all things holy will someone please solve this mystery?  Unravel this riddle?  Tell me.  Tell me what the hell happens when that button is pushed.  It’s driving me f***ing nuts.

time to let go

I’M STRUGGLING, wading through the waves of emotional hell that flood me – a tsunami of heartbreak.

THE WOUNDS are still fresh but that doesn’t stop people from asking if I’m ready to move on.  It hasn’t even been a month.  Well-meaning people asking if I’m ready to “get back on the horse.”

Would you be ready?

ALL THE QUESTIONING and good intentioned pestering (and I think we all know what they say about good intentions, don’t we?) made me wonder:

How will I know when it’s time to let go?

time to let go

HOW WILL I KNOW when I’m ready to release the sadness, release the pain, release the future I lost and embrace my new life, my new future with all its mysteries and mayhem?  How will I know?

Would you know?

HERE’S MY THEORY as of this exact moment (& this may be wrong. 6 hours, 6 days, 6 weeks or 6 months from now I may have a different answer) I will just know…and if you’re suffering from loss, so will you.

NO ONE ELSE can tell you how to mourn or when to release your anger, your suffering, your regrets or how to move forward into joy.  No one else’s timetable with their “shoulds,” “ought tos,” and “by nows” matters.  It’s your pain.  It’s your sadness.  It’s your healing.  Only you can move through it and only you’ll know when it’s time to let it all go…as will I.

I KNOW that, as with any wound, time will mend this…it’s already begun.  And like a cut on the finger, it will hurt, sting and throb.  You may try to use it too soon (usually out of stubbornness, frustration or good old fashioned denial) and freshen the wound, slowing the healing.  It may become infected and need some attention (like quality time with a good friend or a few visits to a therapist).  Once healed you’ll find it aches from time to time, the scar creating a discomfort of its own.  That is the nature of wounds, that is the nature of healing.

I will heal…and so will you.

time to let go

ONE DAY, when I no longer wake from dreams attempting to live out the life that’s forever gone, when I smile at the moments shared instead of mourning the ones lost, I will be ready to let go.  It will feel right…sad, final, but right.

SO ON BEHALF OF THOSE of us who are grieving I say:

WE WILL MAKE no plans or promises of whens or how-longs.  But please know that while we hurt, we are healing…and healing deep wounds doesn’t happen overnight.

Patience.  Love.  Support.  Not from others but from & for ourselves.

Give yourself time.
And I will give myself time.
Trust ourselves.
We will know when it’s time to let go.

Kisses & Chaos,

Alli Woods Frederick
