To say the past two weeks have been trying would be a serious understatement.  But amid the chaos and turmoil there was still so much for which to be thankful, thankful and thankful some more.  Isn’t it interesting that when things are at their best it can be so simple to take gratitude for granted but when you are in the midst of trying times gratitude literally seems to fill every corner of every room.  So here we go:

Things I Love Thursday:

The Happy Squirrel Edition

Squirrel by Andrey

My husband, who never ceases to amaze me.  He is filled with such goodness and light.  He is a source of strength and joy.  I am so grateful to have him in my life. *  My mom, who is, most certainly the most kind and giving person I have ever known.  Yes, I am biased, but you only need spend a few minutes with her to know that she is genuine, sincere, loving and kind…and generous almost to a fault.  I want to be just like her when I grow up…whenever that may be. *  Feeding squirrels in the park.  They are evidently fed with such regularity that they are pretty fearless.  They came right up on the table and parked their cute little fuzzy butts about 8 inches away and just munched and munched on the peanuts we were shelling.  Even my honey, who doesn’t have an overwhelming appreciation for nature, was cooing and melting at their adorableness.  It was pretty freaking awesome. *  Driving around and looking at houses.  This town has so many amazing old Victorian homes that are in dire need of some tender loving care.  I love to drive around and look at them and imagine them in their heyday.  I hope someone buys them and gives them the love and care that they need. *  The amazingly sweet (and seriously overweight) pit bull that greeted me at the gym yesterday.  Bless her precious little heart.  She came waddling up, hind end wiggling around in manic gyrations independent of the rest of her body.  She just flopped herself over right on top of my legs nearly knocking me down and looked up with eyes full of love.  She made my heart melt.  Man, I love animals. *  Having a super-mellow Valentine’s Day with the focus on love and not things. *  Time spent with family.  Family and love are everything in this life.  Everything.

What made your heart go pitter-pat this week?

I leave you with more photos of squirrels and other fuzzy things, because they’re cute and because I can.

Creative roadblocks suck, plain and simple.  They are often overwhelming, fear inducing and self-perpetuating.   Have you really run out of brilliant ideas or does the blame lie with external influences and circumstances?  What causes these villains of the creative world to rear their ugly heads anyways? Let’s take this one creativity killing monster at a time.

The First Monster of the Creative Apocalypse:
Stress!!!!!

"photograph of girl collapsed on floor with the contents of her purse spilled out"

what was in my bag by Evil Erin

Ah, yes, the stress monster.  Sometimes he is unavoidable.  He crashes into your life uninvited and unwelcome, flails about, makes a mess of things and always seems to stay entirely too long.  Fye on you, stress!  Fye!  What exactly are the primary causes of stress?  You might be surprised at the answer.  It isn’t always negative situations that create it.  If your boss is mad at you, you overslept for your psych 101 midterm, have had a death in the family or are going through a breakup then you are, quite obviously, stressed…as well you should be.  Did you know happy events can be equally stressful?  Oh it’s true.  And contrary to what you might think, your body cannot distinguish between good stress and bad stress.  Weddings, births, promotions, they all create stress which impacts your body and that beautiful, brilliant brain of yours.

The Side-effects Of Stress

So we all know what causes stress in our lives, but do we know what it does to our bodies and minds?  How do those effects impact the creative process and our productivity?

Stress can have a significant impact on your health.  The effects run the gamut from headaches and memory-loss  to high blood pressure, a compromised immune system and mood swings.  Not good.  How could you possibly expect yourself to be creative when you’re combating all that yuckiness on top of the stress you’re under?  Cut yourself some slack!

How To Manage Stress

Since just about everything in the known universe seems to create stress, how can you escape it?  The bad news is, you can’t.  The good news is you can lessen its effects using several stress management techniques.  Here are a few things you can do to help alleviate the effects of stress:

  1. Get a massage. This is a wonderful way to alleviate stress.  It makes your muscles and mind melt.  If the idea of a stranger touching you while your most private bits are covered by nothing more than a sheet makes you cringe, fear not!  You can opt for a chair massage (which is done fully clothed) or you can discuss your concerns with your therapist.  You don’t have to get naked.  You can leave your skivvies  on if you like…even your pants.  A professional massage therapist will work within your comfort level.
  2. Take a bath. Light some yummy scented candles, put on some relaxing music, add bubbles or lavender scented Epsom salts..whatever is going to make you bliss out.  An added bonus to this one:  you can make it as inexpensive or as decadent as you like.  It’s entirely up to you.
  3. Exercise. I know we hear this one all the time but it’s absolutely true.  I know I get some of my best ideas during a good yoga session or quiet walk.  So get out there and get moving!
  4. LAUGH!!! Invite over some friends or get your favorite snuggle buddy (mine are my husband and my cat, Mischa), make some popcorn, pop in a funny dvd (I suggest anything with Zach Galifianakis or Bob Hope) and get your laugh on!
  5. Have a good cry. I know this contradicts number 4, but sometimes a good cry is order.  Getting those feelings out will help kick that stress monster to the curb…and you’ll probably have a great night’s sleep to boot!
  6. Sleep for crying out loud! Do I really need to explain why this is important for your mental and physical health?  I thought not.  However, if you’re so keyed up and anxiety-ridden that sleep is becoming a precious commodity, try taking melatonin about 30 minutes before bed.  It’s what your brain creates to make you sleepy.  It is typically well tolerated but be forewarned:  it can cause uber-crazy dreams and night terrors for some people…And don’t forget to talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking any new supplements.  Just because a supplement is over the counter doesn’t mean it’s safe for you to take.  There’s always the possibility of a drug interaction so better safe than sorry.

There are billions upon billions of healthy ways to alleviate stress.  These are just a few suggestions. Whether you laugh, talk, dance or meditate, just do what you need to do to get it out and let it go…or at least get all that yucky junk off your mind for an hour or two.

Do you have any tried and true tricks for managing the stress in your life?  Feel free to share your tips in the comments section below.

Next week we’ll tackle the monster known as Inspiration…or to be more specific, the lack thereof.

There are times, when life has taken an unexpected and most unwelcome turn, it can be difficult to feel grateful for much of anything.  Other emotions such as anger, sorrow and resentment can be so much easier to come by.  It is at these times in particular that counting your blessings and remembering that there is still joy becomes so important.  Even in the most challenging times when our spirit is tested, there is still room for joy and appreciation.  Even when we are grieving it is still ok to smile and laugh…to find happiness.  I think we, as a culture, forget that sometimes.  Don’t feel guilty if, in the midst of hardship, we can still laugh and find joy.  It is a blessing and should be treasured.

Things I Love Thursday:

The Finding a Light in the Darkness Edition

* My amazing family.  I know I say this all the time, but I really don’t know what I woud do without them.  They are my lighthouse when I am at sea.  I am blessed to have them. * Snow.  While it is frustrating to miss so much work, snow is just so beautiful.  The way it sparkles and gleams and completely transforms the landscape is just breathtaking. * Melatonin.  It is amazing at giving me a great night’s sleep.  If it could only stop my honey from hogging the covers it would be perfect. * I bought myself a really cute tumbler from Target.  It’s really big, white and has transparent hearts all over it.  Drinking out of it makes me smile. * My so sweet kitty, Mischa.  He always knows exactly who needs extra snuggles and when.  He doesn’t have a mean bone in his body; even when playing he’ll “attack” your hand, but he never uses his claws and he doesn’t bite down.  He’s funny and particular.  If you remind me, I’ll tell you about the time his curiousity got the best of him in regards to my wedding veil…it’s really too funny…and really weird, too. * All the little distractions in life, like a good story, twizzlers and hot showers, though not necesarrily at the same time. *  Two exceptional customer service experiences which is, in this day and age, virtually unheard of…Amanda at Forever 21, who went above and beyond and Paula at Modcloth.com who was mind-blowingly wonderful with all the help she offered.  Thanks to both of them for making the week much easier. * All of you…each and every one of your brilliant and beautiful selves. *
