I was at a local gallery for an awards ceremony for a photography contest I had entered.  As I milled about enjoying the other photographers’ work I noticed an older married couple examining my entry “Gloucester from a Car Park.”  Out of curiosity, I inched closer in an attempt to overhear what they were saying (yes, I know eavesdropping is wrong, but don’t judge me.  Curiosity was killing this kitty) and overhear I did.

“Oh my,” said the wife.  Í don’t like this at all.”

“Really?  Why not” inquired the husband.

“It’s so…dark.  It’s just too dark.  I don’t like it.  I just don’t like it.” (pause)  “It’s too dark.”

“Huh.  I really like it.”

With that last remark the wife walked away with a scowl.  The husband looked at it a moment longer, shrugged his shoulders and walked away.

I found this conversation very informative, somewhat confusing given that the subject matter is far from controversial, and oddly reassuring.

At the risk of sounding egocentric, the work I create, I create for myself.  I create pieces that I find pleasing to my eye…that tell a secret story to my soul.  I am fully aware that my aesthetic and subject matter aren’t to everyone’s liking and tastes and the couple’s conversation made me realize that THAT’S OK.  Naturally, as an artist (for we do tend to be an insecure and emotional lot…my own fear of rejection can border on pathological at times.), I would love nothing but positive feedback and reassurance from everyone that lays eyes on my work, but this will never be the case.  Does this devalue my work?  Does it mean I’m not talented enough?  Does this mean I’m not good enough?  Nope.  Not a whit.  The only thing it means is that art is subjective and people have differing tastes.

I know it can be tempting to trade in your aesthetic vision for images that are more marketable and follow the current photographic and artistic trends.  When you are struggling to sell a piece or even get your work out there to be seen the temptation can be great indeed.  What benefit will you reap in the long run?  If you abandon your true artistic vision then what happens when the trend on which you’ve built your career dies (which it inevitably will)?  You have to ask yourself, is it really worth it?  It can be lonely being the only fish in the pond, but all that space and freedom gives you room to play and grow.  It gives you the freedom to experiment, to make mistakes, to learn.  Build!  Grow! Create!  Be bold!  Be daring!  Be yourself!

We’ve all heard it time and time again:  follow your heart.  Stay true to your passion, stay true to what drives you to create and you cannot truly fail.  Your market might be a niche market, but the market is out there. Me?  I’m weird and I know it.  My tastes and interests are pretty far from the mainstream a majority of the time and I wouldn’t have it any other way.  I am learning to appreciate criticism as much as praise.  I am finding my way.  I am finding my niche.  There are few things more beautiful, more powerful than genuineness and sincerity.  There are others who will appreciate your vision.  There are others who will love what you create.  Be genuine.  Be sincere.  You are not alone.  I promise.

My honey and I went to see Clint Eastwood’s “The Hereafter” the other night and it was AMAZING.  Absolutely amazing.  If you are expecting a paranormal thriller then you will be disappointed.  (Four people got up and walked out halfway through the film, which actually boggled my mind!)  If, however, you are expecting an amazing character driven story about life, fate and the “other side” you will be thrilled to bits.  The first five minutes are disturbingly hard to watch, so be forewarned.  I actually yelped out loud and ducked my head at one point (my sincerest apologies to my husband, who I’m sure was embarrassed).  I am admittedly horrible at writing synopses without spoiling the ending, so I won’t even try.  I will however tell you that this is a film that I will watch over and over and over.  Matt Damon’s performance will melt your heart…especially in the scenes involving Charles Dickens.  I’m smiling just thinking about it.

I love that Clint Eastwood tackled the subject of life after death. I even wrote an essay for Soapbox Sunday (Dear Science, Do We Really Die?) addressing the scientific communities neglect of the subject.  The existence of an afterlife is a topic I am passionate about almost to the point of obsession.    This is due, at least in part, to the myriad of experiences I have had throughout my life…but that’s not the point.  The point is:  Go see “The Hereafter.”  If you’ve already seen it, I would love to know what you think.  Did you love it?  Hate it?  Did you find yourself wishing Clint would return to his Dirty Harry days or do you like the softer Clint that has emerged over the past couple of decades?  And if someone could please explain to me why I have such a hard time telling Marky Mark and Matt Damon apart even though they really look nothing alike, I would really appreciate it.

Until next time!

Dear Science, Do We Really Die?

Ah, science.  You do so much for us.  You care for us.  You give us such wonderful things: airplanes, ipods, vaccines, and lipgloss.  You explain our universe to us…you put it in a box and wrap it up with a pretty little bow.  You create and explain miracles.  You are the seeker of answers, the solver of riddles.  When we need to know why the sky is blue, you are there to explain.  When we need to know if Pluto is a planet, you are there to give a resounding “No, not anymore.”  So why is it that you have failed to answer or even adequately investigate one of the greatest mysteries of all time…a mystery that occurs almost universally and with much greater frequency than solar flares, hurricanes, or strangelets.  I’m talking about ghosts.  That’s right, ghosts.

Why have you ignored this phenomenon when it is so pervasive?  I understand that science demands experimentation.  The results must be easily replicated time and time again and that the very nature of paranormal phenomena makes this all but impossible.    How do you accurately measure something you cannot ordinarily perceive?  Can you touch a strangelet?  Can you see dark matter?  We cannot see atoms with the naked eye, nor can we fully explain why gravity works…but we CAN experience them.  So why is it that timeless and universal experiences like ghosts and hauntings, which millions upon millions of people throughout history have encountered, are so readily discounted by science?  Does the existence of life after death not warrant honest and earnest investigation?  What is the cause of this neglect?  Is it perhaps because the scientific community, which is notoriously and sometimes vehemently atheist to the point of ostracizing their theist peers, assumes that an afterlife and God are mutually exclusive?  Is it not possible that life after death is merely an extension of natural laws that we have not yet come to understand?  Is the ghost in the machine dependent on the existence of a higher power or can it exist in a universe with no God? Science, you claim no bias, but who do you think you’re kidding?  To refuse to investigate a global phenomenon and to shun your more religious peers demonstrates tremendous bias.   What will it take for science to accept the accounts of the millions who have had ghostly encounters?

I am calling science out.  I hereby ask you, beloved science, to step up to the plate, use your glorious collective genius and examine one of the greatest mysteries mankind has ever encountered.  Set aside your biases and assumptions.  Millions of people can’t be wrong.  Investigate this paranormal phenomenon in earnest.  Help us discover the truth about life after death. I dare you to rise to the challenge.  I double dog dare you.

What about you, dear readers?  Have you ever had a ghostly encounter?  Have you had an experience from the great beyond?  Do you have an opinion or theory you would like to share?  I would love to hear your stories or thoughts on the subject…if you tell me yours, I’ll tell you mine.  *wink*

*Note:  This is in no way meant to undermine or devalue the hard work of paranormal investigators.  They do an amazing job at furthering the field, contributing new technology and amassing evidence.  My hats off to you all.

Good morning, you crazy kids!  I trust you are all fabulous today.  I’m really excited to show you all the yummy goodness I’ve been working on.  It’s quite the departure from my usual fair…still quirky but much lighter.  Something happened to my brain when I met my husband.  It got all mushy and sugary and started liking pink and hearts.  Is it possible to be your own doppelganger?  One thing I know for sure:  being twitterpated has had a definite effect on my creativity.  Don’t get me wrong, I still love my moodier pieces, but it is nice to have a little sunshine now and then, don’t you think?  These will all be available as prints in my store just as soon as the website is up and running.  I will, of course, keep you posted.  So without further ado I present “Home,” “The Bee’s Knees,” and “Apple To Eye.”  I hope you love them as much as I do.
